HASAN BABA – BIOGRAPHY
Hasan Baba is an educator, composer, songwriter and a follower of the ashiks tradition dealing with themes of love, passion, nature and social issues. He has composed numerous works interpreted by many esteemed performers. He becomes a proprietor of six albums.
Hasan Baba was born to Elif and Haydar on September 9, 1957 in Gümüşhane Şiran / Kozveren Village as the middle brother of five children. In 1960, he migrated to Tunceli Pertek / Havsing Village with their family. As a teenage boy, he took his first step into the music world thanks to a saz (a stringed instrument which somewhat resembles a lute), a gift from his older brother. His family was the source of inspiration for Hasan Baba grown within the ashik tradition. He took his first solo stage in secondary school at the age of 14.
Turkey was experiencing great social unrest when he was attending the Teacher High School. He could not remain indifferent to suffering, oppression, injustice, and inequity stemming from this unrest. Hasan Baba, as a young ashik, reflected his feelings with his saz and words as best as he could. During this period, he took stage with esteemed ashiks like Mahsuni Şerif and Ashik İhsani whom he met on a common cultural and musical ground.
While performing these social and cultural activities, he also went through a number of trial processes due to his dissident identity. Hasan Baba has come out of his family to appeal to a wider community. In doing so, he was mainly inspired by great ashiks like Yunus Emre, Kaygusuz Abdal, Pir Sultan Abdal, Karacaoğlan, Ashik İhsani, Mahsuni Şerif and İbreti who were grown in the cradle of Anatolia and the humanity in general. This honorable way and philosophy led him to a certain fragile position.The same difficulties in the course of life did not leave him during his university years. After his graduation, he worked as an educator and a manager in various organizations. But the conditions to stay in the country became more severe and thus intolerable day by day. So he made a snap decision and went to Switzerland on March 6, 1985.
Since then Hasan Baba has been living in Switzerland without interrupting his artistic activities. He interpreted his own works with foreign music groups, giving concerts in almost every country in Europe. In this way, he has introduced the Anatolian culture to Europeans to some extent.
Hasan Baba was awarded at the international festival which was attended by 17 countries in Italy / Milan under the innovative folk music category. He has contributed to the promotion of Anatolian folk culture to Europeans as a guest artist in Italian and Swiss radios for many years. At the moment Hasan Baba continues his artistic activities with great love and passion.
He married in 1979 and has a son named Ayhan Turhan. His stage name is Raman Turhan, he graduated in film and theatre arts in Italy.
